The name ‘Dagenham’ is believed to derive from a small farmstead, the "ham" or farm of a man called Daecca.         

The southern tip of Dagenham, next to the River Thames, forms part of the London Riverside section of the Thames Gateway redevelopment area. 

Dagenham was once home to the Ford motor company – at its peak it employed 40,00 workers. 

Historic Valence House in Dagenham is a timber-framed medieval building, partly surrounded by a moat. Now a museum, the grade II-listed house and its surrounding parkland are popular with visitors and locals.             

Eurovision winner Sandie Shaw, former England football manager Sir Alf Ramsey and actor and comedian Nick Frost, were all born in Dagenham.
